Neck Pain Assessment in Philadelphia PA
Today we’re going to talk about how we take care of neck injuries in our practice. If you recall from the previous video when we talked about neck injuries, we talked about how do you know if you have a neck problem. Also we talked about what are the things that we’re looking for in terms of whether you have a problem in your neck?
We mentioned we can get information from an MRI to let us know if there’s any problems with the discs. We can do what we call palpation. We can feel for restricted movement in the joints. We can also palpate to feel the muscles, tendons, the ligaments moving, if they’re taught or restricted.
And so today what we’re going to do is we’re going to demonstrate not only some of the things that she does like trigger point work, but she’s also going to show you what a manual chiropractic adjustment looks like in our office. There’s lots of different ways to adjust, so we’re going to show you a couple of different techniques that we utilize in our practice.
So when you have a patient on the table that’s suffering, what are some of the things that you may do first, before you do the adjustment? Obviously, you’re going to allocate it, give us a little example of what you would do and tell us what you’re doing.

What I’m going to do first is some soft tissue work, or manual therapy just to help the muscles in the neck relax, just to also do some soft stretching as well. A lot of times patients come in and they’re under a lot of tension or they’re under a lot of stress. So what we do is we try to relax the soft tissue that could be guarding the joint. So we do manual therapy techniques or trigger point work, myofascial release. Most of our doctors will do that work before the adjustment. Some may do it after the adjustment as well. That would be an example of a more manual technique.
We use a little bit of force to help quickly put movement back into the restricted joint, the restricted soft tissue that could be also a culprit of the pain that our patient is experiencing. But we also have patients that can’t tolerate a more manual adjustment. So we use an instrument called an activator and we use other forms of instrument assisted adjustments as well.
Dr. Nancy is going to demonstrate what that looks like. So again, some patients can’t tolerate manual adjustments. So we want to make sure that we’re equipped to be able to take care of whoever comes into our office. So Dr. Nancy is going to show us the same thing. She’s going to find the restricted segment that she wants to adjust. But instead of using her hands she’s going to use an instrument that’s gonna put a very slight and gentle in the restricted area. It generally does not hurt but sometimes it is sensitive. But these are some of the techniques that we utilize on our patients in our office.
