Hi everyone. My name is Dr. Rogers Saias, your chiropractor for disc pain in Philadelphia, PA. Today, I wanted to talk to you about one of the more common problems that we see in our practices. And that’s problems related to the discs of the spine.

So if you’ve watched any of these videos, and I hope you have, we talk a lot about mobility. So how the spine and your body moves, and we talk about alignment. How well aligned are you? One of the most common misalignments we see in the spine, you can see it in your posture. We have a lot of patients that present with a head where the ears are shifting in front of the shoulders.

Chiropractic for Disc Problems in Philadelphia, PA

This is one of the most common misalignments of the spine. When the head shifts forward. It puts a lot of pressure on the joints, but it puts a lot of pressure on the discs. So I’m going to give you a really easy way to picture what’s happening with the disc. Now this is really basic, but I want you to picture what’s going on because we see so many people that come in with these MRI reports and they don’t understand anything on them. So I want you to be able to walk away from this video understanding a little bit about how the disc can cause so many problems in your body.

So I want you to picture an ice cream sandwich. So we’ve got this circular ice cream sandwich. It can be whatever flavor of ice cream you want. We’ve got a cookie, we’ve got ice cream, and we’ve got another cookie on the bottom. If we push on the front of the ice cream sandwich, it pushes the ice cream backwards. If we push on the right side, it goes to the left. And on the left, that goes to the right. And if we push on the back of the ice cream sandwich, the ice cream goes forward.

So in terms of the discs, the vertebrae in the discs are like that ice cream sandwich. These white things are the vertebrae, the bones of your spine, this dark layer is the disc. So when we see these whiplash injuries, or these work related injuries,or these people presenting with this forward leaning or this forward flexed posture, it puts a lot of pressure on the front of the discs.

Now over time, that’s gonna cause problems. Initially, it might not be a problem, but the longer you stay in this sustained bad posture, where you don’t ever improve your alignment or you don’t ever improve your mobility. Over time those discs are going to break down, wear out. But if the ice cream is getting pushed backwards, it’s going to get pushed possibly into the nerves. And it could possibly get pushed into the spinal cord in severe cases.

We do see severe cases or practices. We see patients presenting with burning pain or fire down their arm, or they get that numbness and tingling where they can’t feel their fingers. And it’s usually associated with the disc related problem in the neck.

So if you ever have this radiating pain, radiating means it’s traveling from the neck down your arm. You probably have a disk problem. If you have pain radiating or traveling down your leg. You probably have a disc problem. You may even have something called sciatica.
